LONG-TERM FOLLOW-UP
Keith A. Shearer
1. Involve the New Believer in the life of the local church
(#5 on "The Dynamics of Evangelism and Discipleship" outline)
a. Encourage regular attendance and participation: habit patterns are established during the first six months of involvement and are difficult to change later
b. Every Christian needs two types of church experiences:
1. cell group experience: Jesus spent much time with just three men (Peter, James, John: see Matthew 17:1), and He spend a great deal of His remaining time with just twelve men (see mark 3:13014). A band of Philippian believers met in the home of Lydia (Acts 16:40)
2. Congregational experience: Jesus also spent time with the multitudes (see Matthew 4:25, 8:1, 8:18, etc.) and attended the synagogue (see Mark 3:1). David was involved in congregational celebration (see Psalm 42:4).
2. Incorporate the New Believer into the life of the local church
(#6 on "The Dynamics of Evangelism and Discipleship" outline)
a. challenge them concerning dedication to Christ - Romans 12:1-2
1. Let them know that there is a cost involved in serving Christ and that discipleship has demands (see Luke 14:25-35)
b. Teach them about believer's water baptism and encourage them to obey the Lord in this act (Matthew 28:19-20, Acts 2:38)
c. Teach them about local church membership (its importance, values, and responsibilities) and encourage them in this step (Acts 2:41, 47)
d. Challenge them to greater growth through involvement in church opportunities and individual study (perhaps utilize the "Christian Basics" series)
