What is a Christian Mission
A Christian Mission is a single or group of Christians reaching out to non-Christians. Spreading the good news throughout the world. (Ps 96:3,10; Mt 28:19; Mk 16:15; Lk 24:47-48).
Why should we be concerned with Missions
Jesus tells us very clearly that we are expected to do His work on earth. Are you being obedient to Jesus?
Mt 24:14 says: And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.
Lk 14:27 says: And anyone who does not carry his cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.
As you can see by these two versus (there are many more like them), the gospel will be heard in every nation. And if we do not do our part, we cannot be counted as a disciple of Christ.
How can I do my part
There are three ways you can help in this great commission.
Pray:God works through prayer mightely! God is the answerer of prayer. Many of us find it easy to pray when we need/want something but we fail to pray for the lost in the world. We forget to pray for those that go out into the world to spread the good news.
John 17:9 - (Jesus prays) I pray for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me, for they are yours.
John 17:20-26 - (Jesus prays) 20"My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, 21that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one: 23I in them and you in me. May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.
24"Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world.
25"Righteous Father, though the world does not know you, I know you, and they know that you have sent me. 26I have made you known to them, and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them."
Pay:We are also to be good stewards of the money God gives us. We are to use what God allows us to manage for His good purpose. Yet how often do we say that we can't afford to help financially. At the same time we expect God to bless us and ease our financial burdons.
Ac 11:29-30 - The disciples, each according to his ability, decided to provide help for the brothers living in Judea. 30This they did, sending their gift to the elders by Barnabas and Saul.
2Co 8:1-4 - And now, brothers, we want you to know about the grace that God has given the Macedonian churches. 2Out of the most severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity. 3For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability. Entirely on their own, 4they urgently pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing in this service to the saints.
Preach:There is also the need for people to go out into the world to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ. God may have placed this burden on your heart to go out to a mission field. However, not everyone is called to the mission field, but we are all called to tell those around us about our blessed hope in the Lord Jesus Christ in "our neighborhood mission field."
Mt 28:18-20 - Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them inA the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."
Mt 10:32-33 - "Whoever acknowledges me before men, I will also acknowledge him before my Father in heaven. 33But whoever disowns me before men, I will disown him before my Father in heaven.
What can I do
Help in your local church to support their different mission projects through prayer, financial support, and/or going on a mission trip. There are many short term mission trips available if you are not called as a full-time missionary.
If your church does not sponsor missions or if you would like to do more, I have listed below some missions that the New Beginnings Myerstown Grace Brethern Church is sponsoring. They would greatly appreciate any support that God might lead you to give.
